my project car '68 280SL

Hi,
I just dragged the new project car home tonight. Seems very solid, but do not know much more about it right now. The machine was driven into a temp controlled garage 16 years ago and hasn't been touched since. So, these are the before shots. Thanks for looking! Dale

Congratulations! Looks very ok considering it's a 44 year old car. Good thing it was garaged for about a third of its life. Lots of luck with the restoration!

Nice find! Not sure I would restore it, looks pretty nice as is, especially if it is original. This seems like it would be a great car to treat to a major service and then clean top to bottom - then enjoy helping the car make up for those 16 years of lost road time...

Looks like a great find. Congratulations!

If it doesn't fit, force it.
If it breaks, it needed replacing anyhow.

Got her home

Thanks everyone for the comments on the new ride. I got her off the trailer and in the shop tonight, but not before I gave her a bath. Wow, she is really solid, I am very pleased. To make it even better I found the owners manuals and the tool kit in the trunk with the spare tire. The owner changed the oil before storage 16 years ago, so that is a bonus. Seems like the car is complete anyway, but not without some damage from mice. The have chewed the wood on top of the dash and some of the leather on the removable hard top inside. Well, don't want to bore everyone, I am just very excited! I have a few more pics, but this will be it for a while (I promise). Thanks for looking, Dale

Hi Spangy,
I have three words for you on that car... YES YES YES!!! Great find my friend.
Also, no worry about boring us, we are all here because we are enthusiasts and I for one can never see too many pictures of a fine vintage roadster like yours. Feel free to check back often with your progress, but as OldWorldShepherds suggested, that car appears to be the definition of "survivor" and could just be cleaned up a bit, even some minor "damage" left alone, it all tells a story. From my own experience, I was so excited to get to work on my coupe when I first got her that I did some "repairs" that I now wish I had left alone. They are only original once and you can always do the work later, so take your time and above all, have fun with her.

PS: Nice assortment of odd bits in the trunk, fun stuff. Even has the OEM supplied canister of Tortilla Chips, a rare and desirable option.
