wont turn over sometimes

78 euro spec 300d, In the morning I inset key in ignition turn to right , wait for glowplugs to turn off then send the key to the right, Nothing, turn all the way off and repeat maybe 3-4 times then finaly one time it starts. When it starts it starts right up. Do I need a new ignition? Why does nothing happen? I really dont want to be stranded one day. I am a new merc owner'

are there service records? receipts for work done?
if no
then get a new battery, clean all cables from battery to starter and ground connections, remove and rebuild starter.
These are normal maintenance items and if neglected.......

These diesels are very dependent upon these items.
You do not want to get stranded by not having a perfect starter system.

Just replace battery? I dunno im not for switching out parts for no specific reason. when the starter works it works fine, no click no buzz no grind it works just fine. The battery seems just fine as well(i will bench test it today) but there is no reason for me to believe its the battery, when it works it works just fine, maybe there is a ground wire loose maybe its a way to tell me to replace the ignition switch? do these go out often? Ive had this thing for a week and its my first benz only has 120k miles on it. Im a decent mechanic but this is a new beast for me.

With a good battery and at 120k miles the starter would be needing a freshening up,
Ive done this and the spin is optimized
The brushes get worn, the starter insides get crudy, rebuild.

the key switch could be the next and do fail more rarely.

Battery is good, I believe it may be the key switch, it just did it to me again. The starter will probably be my next overhaul(I do this in phases) but for now it seems there may be a short in the ignition switch. iF the starter gets its juice it works perfectly, turning the key doesnt seem to get it the juice

Your car should have a 3-wire terminal block on the right side inner fender near the firewall. You can test the ignition switch by shorting the center wire to the one toward the front of the car (I think it's a purple wire). Anyway, it's the one that runs down to the solenoid. If that doesn't' start the car, the starter is bad or you have a bad ground somewhere.

While shorted and the car still doesn't start, try whacking the starter with something. If it turns over then, the solenoid/starter is going out.

It happened again and I held the key in the start position and with my other hand moved the shifter a bit,(it fired right up) it must be the neutral safety switch a bit outa spec/wack! jees those are a bit pricey...

In that case, it may just be the shifter bushings that are worn or missing.

Much cheaper to replace. Search around on the w123 forum for a lot of good info.
