Euro 280SL or a 450 ?

Hi All,

Greetings. I just picked up a 280SL 1977 here in Northern Caliofornia. It has a 5 speed with the rock solid 6 cylinder motor. The rear trunk has a badge of a 450. It has the 4 round headlights. The bumpers have the 450 style big bumpers. A sticker on the inside of the door does state it was imported in 1977 by Barry Busby I guess he was the original owner.

I don't think there was a engine or transmission swap. Is there a registry that anyone knows of so I can get some history on this vehicle?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Raj

If the first 6 of the VIN are 107042 it is a 280 SL. If the first 6 of the VIN are 107044 then it is a 450 SL. It was not unusual for a buyer (non-US) to get a car with the small engine and put the badge for the big engine on the trunk. It was also not unusual to not have a badge on the trunk, which would be preference.

It is a 107042 for the first 6numbers

Hi All,

Thanks a lot for the information, now I know that the car is. Now that it is the desirable 5 speed with the 6 cylinder motor.

I have two more questions:

1. The top was never removed on the car from the previous owner. So I don't know if the soft top is any good or not. I don't have the removal tool to remove the top but would some pliers work instead till I get one?

2. Also is the clutch slave cylinder, is it easy to change ? I am technical as I do most of my own repairs.

Thanks for your help.

The latches at the front of the top can be opened with a big flat screwdriver. The latches at the top of the B-pillar - if they have the chrome caps on them, they also can be opened with a big flat screwdriver. If they are missing the chrome caps, then you will probably have some little square stubs sticking up. I would be very careful removing those with anything other than the chrome cap. I keep an extra chrome cap in my tool box so that I can remove the hardtop at junkyards when I find one. Attached picture shows the chrome caps to which I refer. Are these on your hardtop above the B-pillar? Of so, open hardtop with screwdriver. Also use release handle in compartment behind driver seat. If you don't have the chrome caps, my advice is to buy the chrome caps and open the hardtop then. You can wait that long. Ebay price for the chrome caps is $50 to $150 per cap. Dealer is a lots more I think. You can find this stuff on ebay - search in ebay motors -> parts -> mercedes hardtop and you will get enough matches to see the hardware of which I speak.

Thank you Scoot. I am in no rush, I have many things to fix on this baby so it will be slowly but surely. So I have attached a few pics of my car. It is a brown interior with the original color the dark orange/beige. It was repainted by 2 owners ago.

Nice. Keep your eyes open for some nice non-US bumpers...

That is what my thought was also. Euro headlights, euro bumpers. Some different rims the small front stock air damn with a wood steering wheel. I am not fond of the color so maybe a Green paint job with the brown interior might be there down the road.

If you come across any please let me know.

Thanks,
