Glow Plug Issue Mercedes 240d 1974

I replaced the glow plugs on my 240d as it was not starting. New plugs are in, everything is connected, but it seems that only the first plug is working. All 4 plugs test well.

My glow plugs use the old fashioned metal wire to connect from plug to plug. Is it possible that wire is no longer carrying a charge to the other plugs?

Please help.

When I pull the manual switch the salt shaker display heats up VERY quickly within ten seconds. It seems like only the first plug is working but I know all 4 are good.

By "first plug" are you referring to cylinder #1 or the first plug in the power circuit (actually cylinder #4)? If you mean #4 then check the wire loop between #3 and #4. It is easy to have this wire upside down which will make contact to ground completing the circuit on only the #4 glow plug. It only grounds when the accelerator linkage is pressed down so it's easy to install incorrectly since you don't notice it with the linkage at rest.

Problem solved for the moment. I put in a new glow plug system that fires each one independently instead of in sequence. It starts with two and I will get two more tomorrow.
