Coolant for W108 280SE 4.5

I've read the few posts on this and can't find a definitive answer.

What coolant should I be using in my W108?

Some say zerex g-05, while some say that leaves deposits.

Some say standard ethylene glycol of any good brand.

Some say mercedes brand only (but wouldn't modern MB's need different specs than the old ones).

Choice #1: Mercedes brand
Choice#2: Zerex G-05; properties extremely similar to Mercedes brand, usually more easily available than Mb & costs less

If you can't get either, regular stuff will do. May not have all the beneficial properties touted by the other two, but just flush/replace it each season & the cooling system will be fine.

I've used combinations of all 3 on my 1965 over the years & am still running fine with the original Behr radiator (which has only been professionally cleaned out once by a radiator shop a few years ago).

If your radiator maintenance record is unknown, consider having a good radiator shop boil it clean, pressure test & address any issues it may have. Then refill with #1 or #2. This way your cooling system has a fresh start & the best opportunity for optimum performance.

Service interval with the correct coolant, Mercedes brand or Zerex G05, and a nice clean system to start is three years.

Just to give an update from another source. I sent an email to the classic center and asked their staff. Below was their reply.

"I have a 1972 280SE 4.5 and need to perform a coolant flush. I am not sure which coolant would be appropriate. Would standard ethylene glycol (prestone/peak) be correct, zerex g05? Or would the modern MB coolant sold at my dealership be the appropriate choice for this vintage."

Any one of those three choices will be fine, just do not mix the standard coolant with the g05 or our modern coolant.

The standard prestone/peak coolant is just fine for that era.

The Zerex g05 is fine as well, it is basically the same coolant that is in our bottles. It's just a modern coolant designed for aluminum block engines, but can be used in earlier blocks, will perform just as well.

Same with our modern factory coolant, as I mentioned above.

Thank you
Kind regards, / Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
