'65 W110 - Column shifter bushing replacement question

'65 W110 190C, had no trouble replacing the upper bushings near the steering column. However, the bushings at the firewall that hold the shift rod are completely shot - how do you get it apart? Been trying to figure it out for an hour now, no dice! Any tips much appreciated!

Be aware this job is difficult due to alignment of the shift rods and the levers that operate them.

There are four nuts at the base, on the inside, that need to be undone. The little shift 'transmission' can then be removed on the engine side. Use a helper. Put the shifter in neutral and forward towards the dash. There is a little cover that has to some off the shifter 'transmission' and a nut that needs to be loosened so it can be removed and the bushings can then be replaced. Don't remove the little pawl under the little cover.

I would advise against removing the steering column base due to the rust that causes the long screws to bind in the clip on nuts. I still don' know how to replace the clip on nuts.

Replace the shift rod bushings at the front of the rod as well as the one on the transmission shift levers, on top of the trans.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant
