Problem with new 76' 300d.....

Just bought this nice 300d year 1976' ... Auto trans.

Started 3 times... left overnight and had slugish start ... drove to gas station to get more diesel... wouldnt start. Would slightly turn over but no fire.
as trying to turn it over and over... proceeded to make no noise at all. completely dead.... got my friend to give me a jump start and it fired right up. Drove it 30 mins... power was going... lights dimmed, wiper blades got slower (over about 15mins) til finally power went completely... engine was still running just no power steering or brakes etc.

Decided to get it towed back to home(100 miles).

Im thinking its the alternator, any thoughts? Im new to both mercedes and diesel engines....

Wondering if I should jump it again and take it to an auto store to run diagnostics on electrical stuff but idk if I should risk taking it... although once fired up it runs great....

thanks everyone!

Probably alternator and/or bad battery (because of the bad alternator).

If the engine runs, it should not need the alternator to keep running (the electric things stop working of course as you have written) and the power steering and brake booster should not be affected by a lack of electric power.

If the alternator is seizing up, it can be troublesome, as the belt for the alternator also powers the water pump.

Have the alternator and battery checked. Once it starts, the alternator is supposed to recharge the battery and power the instruments, etc. If it stops sending power, the battery takes over until it gets drained. Battery might be dead too from frequent draining.

As already stated it's most likely the alternator and it may have killed your battery as well. I would put a charger on the battery then get it started and check the voltage.
