Item 0004: Distributor. Bosch 0 231 142 00(looks like 3). With green wire and vacuum lines. Pulled from the 280S (the one on the 280SE was too corroded to bother with). Feel free to make a combination bid on the distributor, cap, rotor, distributor cover, and spark plug wires, or any combination thereof. The cap is Item 0001, I'll post the other items as I find them in the pile.

Item 0005: six Bosch WR7DP platinum spark plugs. Several messages on various forums state, that these should not be used in a Mercedes. Nevertheless, there they were, in the 280S. Number 1 has an extender, it looks broken (no electrodes). Maybe the reason why the car was junked. The plugs are carboned but don't look worn, just dirty and rusty. No top caps.

Item 0006: Blaupunkt radio. Found in the trunk of the 280SE. Both knobs and their underparts, and the hold-in tabs, are there. Glass face is cracked in at least three places. Untested. Service tag on the antenna wire is dated February 1973. I reserve the right to either accept the trade offered me by Jean in post #16 of this thread, or keep it to put in my '85 300D. But if someone wants it ardently enough, maybe I'll let it go.

Item 0007: Taillight surround, right. They just don't make chrome like they used to. The extremely discerning eye, however, notes that it does have the first almost-invisible hint of flash rust starting on it, more on the top horizontal face than the bottom. It's raining now, and going to continue all day, so can't show a picture of how smooth-'n'-shiny and flash-rusted ;-} it is. If it's sunny tomorrow I'll add more pics. Part number 108 826 02 59. Also stamped 224202-1H2 R.

Item 0008: Taillight lens, right. It's raining out, so I took this picture holding it up to the row of vanity lights above my bathroom mirror. There is an about-5-millimeter long, 2-millimeter deep chip, it's on the inside, you can see it by the tip of my thumb on the bottom inside edge of the lens, it would be hidden of course by the surround. Holding the lens straight against a 60-watt light bulb, I do see some crazing in the amber and two red sections, when looking at it through the inside face. Holding it against the light bulb with the interior side close to the light bulb, looking through the exterior, moderate crazing is visible throughout the entirety of the amber part.

But it ain't too bad.

Part number 108 826 0256, also stamped 22 42 02-1H1 R.

Up against the vanity lights:

Crazing visible when looking through the inside, along the top, directly under a 60-watt bulb:
http://i43.tinypic.com/2ns2afa.jpg

Some crazing visible, when looking through the exterior face, if I hold it just right against the light bulb:

Item 0009: Battery hold-down. Pulled from the 280S. A little rust, but not too bad. Is there a tab missing along the short side?

Item 0010: Owner's packet. Found in the glovebox of the 280S. However, I notice that the "CATALOG B" is dated 1968, while the build date of the 280S was 11/69. There was no build date that I could find on the 280SE.

The vinyl packet itself is warped, but not too badly. Its clear plastic face is cracked-apart from the tan vinyl along the upper left edge for about 1-1/2 inches, but it is otherwise uncracked. The vinyl is still supple.

Contents:

Catalog B 1968 on which the binding is still intact (no loose pages),
Service Booklet,
and
Owner's Manual. On the Service Booklet and Owner's Manual, all pages are there, but loose, i.e. their bindings are gone.

Includes the km service stickers from 100,000 to 200,000, and the mile service stickers from 96,000 to 99,000.

Item 0011: Chrome wheel-changing alignment aid. 3-1/2 inches long. Found in the trunk of the 280S, where it was in a clip just inside the trunk (vertical wall of trunk, not the lid). Some rust spots, the other side looks pretty much like this side.

Item 0012: Grille. Pulled from the 280S. Feel free to make a bid on any combination of the hood star, hood star base, badge, or surround+lattice (i.e., what's left after you take the star, its base, and the badge). Top of grille and hood star are slightly flash-rusted but no bubbling whatsoever. Looks like at some point someone replaced the trim strips but didn't do a great job aligning them. Top right (as you sit in the driver's seat) trim strip has two small dents. Missing one clip, it went flying. Rusty on top inside. Gasket was too adhered to the hood to take. Badge has two missing areas of white paint, scratched at the top in the "C", black (paint?) on one tri-star line at 8 o'clock. I also have a second base, found in the trunk of the 280SE.

Item 0013: White wheel cover #1. Steel. Inside is silver. One big dent on rim, several tiny dents; moderate curb rash the entire circumference. There's an indentation on the circle of the tri-star. I cleaned up the backside with brake cleaner spray and paper towels somewhat; when I have more time I'll clean the brake dust off more thoroughly. Clips are rusted but unbroken and still "springy" (all seven of these wheel covers were on the cars, not lying loose). Flash rust on the outer portion of the inside, but not too bad. Otherwise very little rust, the worst seems to be that single drop at 11:30 in the photo below.

The original photos were taken with a 7.1 megapixel camera, so are higher resolution than what tinypic downgrades them to. I can email the originals at full size, on request.
