I use #0000 steel wool for chrome that has very slight "pitting", it's not harsh enough to cause damage since chrome is very hard (the reason it's used), but I avoid it on the grille area, it seems more susceptible to fine scratches for some reason.
If you just got your car it is possible it has stainless steel bumpers and other bits since they are being manufactured for the aftermarket now and many people buy them to fix up a W111 on the cheap before reselling. Not particularly bad but SS does scratch much easier than chrome, tho it will never corrode, pit or peel.

Blue Magic

I also use 0000 steel wool with Blue Magic Metal Polish
Work in small areas with good clean cotton rags.
Lots of work, but good results

The trim around the lower area of windows can be stripped thru the anodize and the soft aluminum polished to beautiful.

If you are asking about trim on your 280SE 3.5 coupe then the trim around the lower part of the windows will be chrome plated brass, not anodised Al. Real metal! You can tell by the weight, but if you want to check then carefully grind off a bit on the back side.
