W113 Transmission Issues

Need some help here. I've got a '69 280SL auto that had the gearbox rebuilt about 500 miles ago (and several years). The 1-2 shift (instant) is perfect; the 2-3 shift performs fine, but the 3-4 shift slips like crazy until the trans is hot. In order to avoid undue wear on the box I have to let off the gas when the 3-4 shift begins to let it drop into 4th. Once the box is at full operating temp (approx 30 min driving), the 3-4 shift is quite crisp. Any ideas?

Thanks.

There is a problem with it which the re-builder needs to address.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Unfortunately, the trans was rebuilt five plus years ago and the warranty has long expired.

I have a fresh rebuilt trans that sat for 7 years with only 700 miles on it, it also has issues shifting into fourth. It seems mercedes trannys don't like to be left sitting idle.

How did you resolve the issue? I did have the trans flushed four times with the thought that it would clear up any sticking valve body issues, but no luck.

Thanks.

I have not been able to fix issues, also did two flushes and filter changes. I was told by one shop that I would need to pull the tranny for a rebuild. I decided to drive it till it blows, then go for a rebuild(would prob cost the same). It has driven this way for 2500 miles.

Bob - I don't agree with what the others have written. I can recommend Sun Valley Mercedes, a.k.a. Sun Valley Dismantlers for transmission rebuild / evaluation. It could be something like an adjustment.
Used Mercedes parts,rebuilt mercedes transmissions
You can check their "adjusting your transmission after installation" page for tech tips. If you are in S. Cal I would just take the car to them and get their opinion. CALL FIRST.
I will also suggest you go to the sl113.org forums for additional help.
