Cool transmission woes

My 1970 250c a four speed automatic, will not shift into 4th. Everyone
tells me that it starts in 2nd, but it roars along without shifting.
The very fact that I have to use premium fuel puts a dent in my budget.
If there anyone who can help me with this, please post message for me.

Thanks, Syria Bari

How fast can you go? What is the fastest you are willing to push it?

I have "pushed" it up to 90, it still stays in third.

Really??, my tranny shifts into 4 th late, but it is at around 45mph.There is no way I could make it to 90 in third. Does it only shift once or does it shift twice?. If it shifts twice, you are getting all of your gears.

Yep if your getting to 90 you have all your gears they just get loud around 65-70 and 80 feels like its gonna blow... no way 3rd is gonna make it to 90

The cars realistically will never get better than 20 mpg... and your probably used to driving a typical 4-speed with overdrive, which allows the engine to save fuel and lower the rpms, while a straight 4-speed does not have overdrive and is about the equivalent to driving in D instead of DO

Thank you for quick response. I feel better, knowing there are persons like you are out there.
I always "listen" to what ever car I drive. It sounded like the trans was going to blow up. One reason I thought something was wrong, the gear shift lever will click in the "slot" marked 4. Thanks, Syria Bari
