W109 300 SEL 4,5l

Newby to both the forum and the world of Mercedes w108/w109 models. I am familiar with w115 and w123. So, any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't have possibility to inspect the car (I am in EU). The car was meant to be very close to daily driver car.

I was looking longer time to buy either W109 (300SEL) or some of the W108 (280SEL, 280SE, 250SE) models. I know that the w109 might be very expensive to maintain due to air suspension issues. I have found an w109 300SEL 72 mod. 4,5l. It is not in perfect condition, 34k miles partly documented (I don't believe, I guess it is rather 134k). Paint looks good on pictures, score 6 (of 10, where 10 is best), no rust, it needs repaint, interior is 10. All mechanical is OK. Air suspension holds for 2 weeks (when car is not in operation), air valves are rebuild according to seller. Price for the car 10-12K USD (e bay). To get it 100% perfect the following needs to be done (input from the most honest seller I have seen on ebay so far):

-glass out bare metal respray, two tone, fill sidemarkers, retrofit to Euro headlights and euro rear bumper, new door and window rubber gaskets
-detail engine bay, cad plating
-retrofit AC to r143 , new hoses, and o rings, new rec/drier & new sanden compressor
-new bilstein shocks
-new subframe mounts
-new motor, trans mounts, new kingpins, suspension bushings F&R
-powder coat air cleaner
--new rotors F&R
-powder coat exhaust manifolds,+ new gaskets
-new michelin tires
-detail underside, check centerbearing, new cad plating on linkages, calipers
-etc etc
-AC is holding a charge but no guarantees, hoses are o rings all original and 40 years old.

So my questions are:
1) Is the car worth the price? What is the real price of such car in the similar condition?
2) Has anybody any idea of the price I would need to pay to fix above listed issues?
3) Is W108, 280SEL, 280SE, 250SE better solution regarding maintenance cost?

Reading through the similar subjects on this and other forums I have concluded that the e-bay MB cars can from time to time be overpriced? Are you of same opinion? So if some of you know anybody who could sell an W108 250SE / 280SE / W109 4,5 / and even W116 300SD and 280 SE it just to suggest here.

Thanks in advance

If you don't absolutely want air suspension, your life and wallet will be much better with a W108.

MBs are (very) expensive to restore, and W108s are still reasonably cheap. So the usual recommendation is to buy the best you can afford. It will always be a much better deal than buying a cheaper one and bring it to the level of the better one (will cost you double or triple).

Don't buy a car without seeing it by yourself, or at least having it seen by someone you trust AND who knows these cars.

Good luck !

To do all the things on your list I think you are looking at $25K USD plus.
