Should I buy a 240D?

I am new to the MB World and have stumbled across a 1977 240D. I love the car and I almost bought it immediately after test driving it, but I decided to be responsible and think it over. Can you suggest of things I should look for to make sure I am buying a quality car that will last me a little while?

Amount of rust would be your primary concern. Rust bubbles on the surface are only tips of icebergs for what may lie underneath. Repairing these could set you back considerably.

Engine condition is also very important. MB diesels may be bomb proof but long term neglect would take its toll.

Good luck!

Be sure it's been continuously registered (driven) and check maintenance records for purported work done. PPI is always a starting point unless you know the cars inside and out. Good luck!

PS- Please finish filling out your User CP so we know where you are located as regional differences can make a difference on what a car came with, or there may be members near you who can offer specific advice or shops.

pull up the carpet and crawl underneath to check for rust. Also check anything made of rubber(bushings, mounts, belts, hoses, window seals). They get good mpg's and are very durable/dependable (when kept up), but they are one of the slowest cars on the road so leave early. Sometimes windshield gaskets rot and let in water rusting the floorpans.

Post some pics when you get it.
