Tell me about this 280SEL....

1972 Mercedes 280 SEL 4.5

Whats it worth?

Paint is 10 years old, looks good from 10ft. Chrome could use a polishing. Runs good, no issues. Just had new distributer, and fuel injectors cleaned, said it was missing at a certain RPM but now is good.

2 of the windows are having issues. AC blows cool, but getting warmer. Had small amount of rust in the wheel wells which he patched and painted.

He is firm on $6750....I think $6,000.

Looks pretty sweet. Be sure to check for more serious rust underneath.

It's worth what you want to pay, but it seems on the high side of what I've seen.

You won't be happy with the gas mileage, but what the hell. The ride quality on these cars is unbelievable.

I would just pay the price and enjoy a fine car, do not sweat the fuel mileage or condition you will appreciate it over time, nothing like it at any price.

I have never owned a car other than these cars

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Nice car. As noted above, a good check of the undercarriage is a must. Not an expert on these but a couple observations: Owner told you about an engine miss that has been addressed, and not sure about the wheelwell rust - is it a recent fix that was not well done, or did he disclose the rust issues as a correction done when he had the car painted? My points being it sounds like he is being pretty honest in describing the car. Also, it looks to me like a pretty honest car -

Elsewhere you post that you are looking for one of these preferably in black, I guess I would say if it is the color you want, and it looks pretty sound, you may wait a while before you find another - is the few hundred bucks worth it? Try a cash offer, $6K is not too far off his "firm price" and see if he bites, he won't be offended like say a $4,500 offer. If not, you have the option of paying up to his asking price.

GOOD LUCK with it and keep us posted!

I am the owner of a 72 280SEL. It has been my daily driver for about 2 years and I love it. As with anything 40 years old, it will require TLC from time to time but I have put about 5,000 flawless miles on mine in the past 4 months.

This car looks like it is in very nice shape. Mine required a lot of work on my part, but I enjoyed it.

By the way, my car was advertised as a 135,000 mile car, but upon reconstructing records from maintenance receipts found in the trunk, glove box, under the seats etc..., I believe my benz to have 350,000 miles. Doesn't matter to me, she runs good, is happy at 80mph and burns about a quart of oil every 5,000 miles.
