European parking light?

Hi,
Can somebody please help me identify exactly what this is?
I am the 4th owner of this 74 Benz 230/4. The original owner brought it over from Europe in 1979. He was a diplomat with the Canadian government, and drove it all over including Moscow. Is this an extra parking light(option?) that came with the /4 cars? Was it needed because it was a diplomatic vehicle?
Any opinions would be welcome. Thanks!

It's a rear fog light. When turned on, helps prevent you getting rear ended during foggy driving conditions. A European accessory.

Rear Foglight

Later model Benzes (mostly for Continental European market) incorporate the rear fog light into the rear left taillight assembly which is activated by the existing fog light switch. One pull activates the front fogs. A second pull activates the rear fog.

These style vehicles will usually have 1 more bulb in the rear left taillight assembly than the right.

In Europe it may not be used unless the visibility is less than 50–100 meters (55–110 yards) due to fog. It can be blinding to the car driver behind you.
