Transmission question - 722.120

Hello everybody,

I have a 1979 300SD, and I believe my transmission fluid may be overfilled. I have been told two different things - 1) Don't worry about it, there is an overflow built in to release too much fluid, and 2) You could damage your transmission from too much fluid.

Which is it? Does my transmission have an overflow, so that overfilling it is not a problem, or is it being damaged every time I drive it?

I have looked high and low for service manuals and specifications on this tranny, and I just cannot find anything. If anybody has any links or knows where I can get some, please let me know.

Thank you.

You had better suction the excess out. Better safe than sorry. I don't think the trans has an ejection system, which would be pollution and create a dangerous oil slick on the road, etc etc etc.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Too much oil and the temperature will rise and the excess oil will be ejected out of the dipstick or the vent. It can lead to transmission damage in the long run.

Thanks for the responses.

I think I figured out a way to measure my transmission fluid accurately, even though I do not have the proper dipstick for this car.

Before I can get my hands on the right dipstick, I can measure from the top of the dipstick tube to the high-water mark of the fluid. Then, if someone who DOES have the proper dipstick can tell me how far the "top" and "bottom" lines are from the top end of their dipstick (where it meets the metal), I can know if my fluid level is correct.

Any takers?
