Exclamation 140mph vs 160mph

Does anyone know if a 140mph speedometer in a 1970 W108 280S can be replaced with a W108 160mph without changing any calibration settings? In other words, will it read correctly?

speedos are calibrated with the rear axle ratio. So you need to know what was the rear end ratio of the donor car compared to yours.

If it is a 160mph then it came out of a 4.5 with a 3.27 rear axle. There are companys that make geared correction boxes-do a search. here is a example:

It could also be out of a 3.5 with 3.46 or 3.69 (or even 3.92 as an option) or out of a 6.3 with a 2.82 or 2.85 rear end.

You can cheat by putting back the 140 mph face on the 160mph mechanism. If your rear end is 3.92 and if the donor is a 3.27, your final indication will show 95 mph instead of 100 mph. If you have 205/70-14 instead of the original 185/14, your indication will be nearly correct, given that originally indicated speed is usually a few mph over the true speed.
