Unusual turn signal problem

Out of the four MBs I've owned, the 70 280SE, 76 300D, 78 240D and 64 190Dc, three or four of them have had this exact or very similar problem.

When using the turn signal lever, instead of blinking it will just be a solid "on" light. No problem with the lever itself, it stays up or down until the turn is complete, just the lights. Since this has happened to 75% or 100% of my old Benzes, I'm assuming it must be a common problem? (If you've ever read Greasy Rider, there is a funny bit about it on their 300D)

Another thing that happens, and only with my recently aquired 64, is that when I use the brakes, the right side blinker comes on (actual light and dash indicator)

Anyone have any insight on this?

The 190D has a ground problem. Check the ground at the tail light assembly itself. Consider running a separate ground wire from both tail light assemblies forward to the common ground point under the dash between the ignition switch and radio. Run the wire under the cover by the door, on the drivers side. That's where the wires run anyway.

As for the other solid on light, take off the turn signal switch cover and remove the switch. Make sure all the screws are tight. Next, swap the working blinker can, from one car to the next. See what happens.

Thank you, Wbain! I have a question though, what is a blinker can?

Sorry, it's the turn signal blinker mounted on the firewall. On the 190 it's silver colored.
