I just purchased a 79 240D and the Becker Europa 2 is playing up. Basically the radio tunes however at full volume the sound is very faint. I don't believe it is the speakers because at full volume plenty of static comes out however the actual tuned station is extremely faint.
Could this be the amplifier and is it easy to replace these?
A Europa 2 from 1979 probably doesn't have a separate amplifier. You could try spraying tuner cleaner inside the radio. To remove it from the car, take the knobs off (pull) and slide the chrome bezel to the left or right and GENTLY pull forward at the same time. The chrome bezel should come off and the plastic dial scale will probably come off with it. Be careful with the dial scale! Then you will see two metal arms where the knob shafts are going up and down with a big set screw in the center of each. Unscrew the big screws, then you can move those arms up and out through the front. Then the whole radio just pulls out from the front. Go the the hardware store, radio shack, whatever and buy a spray can of CRC Contact Cleaner or something like that. Take a couple of screws off the radio and lift off the top and/or the bottom and spray a whole lot of cleaner in there. Put it back in and see if it is any better.
