240D - Oil in injection pump?

Dear Forum:

I was noticing today that there is an oil cap on the injection pump. How much oil should it have in it? How do I measure it? And, what kind of oil should I put in it? I put a screw driver down in it and couldn't detect any oil. It's been working perfectly, but that concerned me.

The oil in the pump should be changed/renewed every time you change the engine oil. The pump needs engine oil.

Unscrew the bolt at the red arrow in the picture below. Pour in oil at the top (blue arrow) until clean oil comes out of the bolt. The bolt is a banjo bolt, so you don't need to remove the bolt, just unscrew. It usually takes about 200 ml (that is about 6.5 fluid ounces).

If you haven't changed oil for a long time, there might be a lot of diesel first that comes out of the bolt.

It is a bit messy, so have some rags under the bolt.

How do I know when it is filled enough? Ie...do you put in a stick or something to have it filled to a certain level?

The bolt is the fill level, so open the bolt, pour in oil until clean oil comes out of the bolt, close bolt and you are done.

The oil level will get to high and in the end, it will flow out of the vent pipe on the back of the pump.

The high oil level can cause frothing, but that is probably not much of a problem in the pump. The diesel in the pump still causes the oil to become thin, so it doesn't provide enough lubrication.
