Let's Talk W108 Brakes

The brakes on Ingrid needs to be overhauled. I was thinking while I was at it to just upgrade it to the bigger brakes on the V8 W108s.

Interested in finding out how to do this and what to buy.

PS: I am not asking if I should or if I need to, I am asking on how to do it, especially from those that have done it before.

Thanks.

Upgrade to what exactly? Thrust reversers?

upgrade to more perfect.

true, short of installing thrust reverser, the factory set-up is perfect.

If the hoses are replaced, pads are correct (ATE), calipers do not leak, master cylinder is good, these factory brakes (even the unvented) will cause the Porsche following you to slide under your rear bumper and fuel tank up to it's windshield and crack it.

True story. Want another?

Hammered the brakes on a 280SE 4.5 once, generated a lot of smoke, saved our asses and sheet metal, ground 3/16 of rubber off a new set of Pirellis, held straight skid, all done with stock parts and no electronics such as ABS. I had to get a new set of tires the flat spot went bump-bump-bump, horrible ride after the stop.

Another one,
same car, girlfriend driving, stomped the pedal while doing 110 MPH, she just had made a comment about the signs reading 110 KMPH, as a car pulled out ahead to pass on a two lane blacktop in Baja. That one was way tooooo close. I thought my future was in a desert in Baja

The upgrade

Get 4.5 vented rotors and wider calipers, nothing else needed.
Replace all ancillary parts stock.

I never said it wasn't but my question was....

I'm installing either an 302 or an LT1 so I want to make sure that I improve the brakes too. You know like the factory did when they installed a V8 in it.

Thanks for answering my very pointed question.

I'll be replacing/rebuilding the rear calipers/master.

Thanks once again.

PS: I won't even need longer wheel studs?

Especially since our friend is stubbornly refusing to tell us what he wants to upgrade to, despite his question being allegedly very "pointed". He is not willing to tell us if he wants to just get a little more braking power/effectiveness or go with some sort of a custom setup with multipiston calipers, platter-sized slotted and cross-drilled rotors, ceramic pads etc. There is upgrading and there is UPGRADING.

Ya know, we can stop space shuttles and 747s
How fast and how not fast is the question?

Great conversation on a friday night.
