1973 W114 280 Transmission Issue

Hey Gang,

While driving my car in local start/stop traffic, I noticed a strange sound coming from the rear end of the car. When shifting through gears, or, while in reverse, I hear a loud echoing clicking sound, kind of like the sound that old metal springs make when stretched out. The sound occurs when shifting or when quickly accelerating. ATF level is fine, although I do want to get a flush/fill done soon. The car is ok on the highway once I'm in 4th gear.

It's parked now as I'm afraid to drive it if a major problem is lurking.

Any thoughts?

You write the sound is coming from the rear but referring to the transmission. Try jacking up the rear of the car and checking under the car for the aforementioned noise.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant
