later w108 wood trim color
I have a 1973 280SE 4.5 with door window trim wood that needs refinishing. The old powder lacquer was a very dark mahogany that was peeling, and easily sanded off to a bare, reddish mahogany veneer.
The dash wood trim is in excellent condition and has a lighter, more blond lacquered finish. I'm told (and shown) at the paint store that while both are mahogany, because the window trim is a darker and redder veneer, there's no stain (even clear urethane) that will get it into the same color family as the dash.
So my question is (questions are!): should the window trim actually match the dash trim, or was it originally the very dark mahogany regardless of the finish of the dash? Is it possible the dash was the dark stain, too, and has been refinished or replaced? How should I proceed with the window trim?
For the dash trim, think beech; for the original window trim finish, think dark chocolate.
