280 SL harmonic balancer

euro 1985 280 SL (not technically a vintage, but, the last time you could find a 280 SL in this country was 78, so it sort of fits here.) motor developed rpm specific vibration at 2100 and 4200 rpm. discovered that the timing marks point south with no. 1 at tdc. either the harmonic balancer elastomeric joint has failed, or the dowels keying it to the crank have come adrift. after considerable searching, found only one available balancer for the 110 motor, and it was in Germany with a price tag of 1200 euros, plus shipping, of course. Anyway, there is a place in Oregon, called Dale Mfg. where they rebuild balancers at a reasonable cost. So if anyone has a similar problem, they can help. Will tear the car down next week and address problem. If the problem is the dowels keying the balancer hub to the crank, will probable try to drill new locating dowels with the crank in place. made a similar repair to an old porsche flywheel/crankshaft joint, and it worked. wish me luck.

That engine had two options for the dowels. There is one that is flat and one that is a slight half-moon shape.

If you have to replace the flat one with a half moon (due to excessive balancer slap). You will have to hand file the half moon, until it fits. If the keyway does not fit tight into the balancer, you have to get a new balancer. The crank should still be ok.

Also if here is no damage to the balancer, you might want to look closely at your timing chain.
