1965 230 Engine Swap?

Hi, I'm a new Mercedes owner, and new to the forums. My name is Kirk, and I work at Young Choppers and Hot Rods in Marietta, GA.

I just purchased my first Mercedes today - a 1965 fintail. It's a 230 sedan in not-too-bad shape. The engine is not running, and before I went through all the trouble of rebuilding it, I figured I'd see which engines have the same mounts, so I could know which engines wouldn't be too hard to swap into her.

It's got the auto transmission, but I don't see any need to keep that particular transmission. As far as difficulty goes, I fabricate metal and build cars for a living, so I am not a newbie in that aspect... I just don't really know a whole lot about Mercedes.

Looks like a nice forum you guys got here. Thanks for having me!

Kirk

Fifty three views, and only a request for a picture? Anyone??

And sorry, I don't have any pics at the moment. Once I get her cleaned up, I'll post some.

PS: The model is 110.011 Does that help?

Well, I have a 1966 200, which is close to the same, and I have been looking for an engine transplant. I have not had any luck finding a bolt in swap, other than putting your motor in mine.

THere is some information on putting a 220/4 in the car. ANd there is a lot on putting a Chevy/ford V8 in a 118.

I say 572BBC and a Tremec 6spd.

Seriously, any of the sixties MB sixes should fit, ranging from 2.2 to 3.0L, these being M130, M129, M180 and M189.

Do you know if the later sixes will fit? In other words, I love the twin cam (M104) engine. Nice power, good economy. But, my initial measurements show it would not fit. Would love to hear otherwise, and any other info that would allow it to fit.

And I think this is on topic for this thread as it could be a good candidate for an engine swap.

Kit,

Someone else posted this, but here is a place making motor mounts for the W118.

Mercedes-Benz

Hope that helps...

I don't think an M104 would fit without major modifications.

The mercedes M116 (3.5, 3.8 and 4.2) and M117 (4.5, 5.0 and 5.6) all V8s, are a straight fit with the right selection of parts in the MB parts bin. You may have a bit of metal work at the back of the tunnel to fit the longer trans. I did two of these transplants. If you want to go that way I can tell you more precisely the parts you need.

Well, I did not start this thread, but, I would love to hear more.

So,

1. Will it bolt up to the existing trans? In my case, I have a 4 speed, and would like to keep it. I like to row gears.
2. Drive shaft: Does it need to be changed?
3. Rear end? It's geared for a 4 cylinder, or in Kit's case, a 6.
4. Any other changes?

Please tell me more... I will have to do more research on those motors.. I would love to have one EFI, even if I use Megasquirt.
