W108 Dash lights

Hello everyone, I've got a 1972 280SE 4.5 with a small problem that's driving me nuts. The right side heater lever light (the one for the ashtray and cig lighter also) is burned out. The left still works and looks cool. I've searched here and all over the internet to find out how to simply change the bulb, but no luck. Lots of articles on how to replace the levers but fortunately mine work great. Question is how far do I have to dig in just to replace the bulb. I don't want to break anything by taking the whole assembly apart, which seems silly just to replace the bulb, but having the left light and the right not is annoying. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rich

I have my dash somewhat apart for fixing a heater valve. I'll take a look tonight for the bulb and see if I can get a picture for you.

Thanks, that would be a great help. I've had the speaker cover off and the ashtray out, but can't see anything that resembles a light bulb.

Well, I couldn't see the actual bulb either, but it looks like the light is coming from the top shinning down. This is a picture taken through the speaker hole. It's the top of the levers. Based on the wires going in, I assume the bulb is inside the round part. Looks like the phillips screw would give you access.

Thanks, great picture I'll give it a try next weekend. Just dug out of 6" of October snow and a weekend without electricity. I'll let you know if I find a bulb inside there.

Sometimes MB uses optic fiber cable to light components on the dashboard. The bulb maybe somewhere else.

From what I've read I think that there's some kind of fiber optics going to the ashtray and cig lighter, but I think that the bulb itself is in the center tube that the lever pivots on. It's just getting into that center tube that i can't figure out. Hopefully removing the phillips screws does the trick, I'll let you all know what I find this weekend.

OK, I attacked the leater lever light bulb problem this weekend and it appears to be simpler than I thought. With the speaker cover removed I could reach the black plastic thing with the wires and the two screws. I disconnected the wires by simply pulling out the plug, but I couldn't get to the screws. Turns out that you apparently just have to pop off the black plastic thing which is actually the bulb cover, the bulb's right there, no screws to remove. Now I just have to find a replacement bulb pop the top back on plug it in and see if it works. Thanks all for your help.
