How do I go about finding a 280SE engine?
I agree regarding putting it back to (at least almost) original. Going from a carb 2.5 to a fuel injected 2.8 would be OK in my book... It's not that difficult to get a 280 SE engine, but the problem is that you don't really know if it is going to run. It's the problem with finding a engine at a junkyard. I got the injection pump and fuel pump of a 280 SE over the weekend. I also have seen guys start engines in cars at the junkyard before pulling them from the cars. The junkyards will allow it (at least some will).
Looks like a very attractive car in the picture. Nice black-plate car - that is really good to have the black plates...
You also might be able to buy an engine from someplace like Sun Valley Mercedes. It's worth asking. One wild card is the injection pump, which is pricy to rebuild.
Let me know if you want me to keep my eyes open (and my hands off) the next 280 SE (or 250 SE or 280 S or 250 S) I see at the yards...
ps - why don't I know you? You are in Pasadena... Let me know if you need parts or want to show-and-tell, etc.
