Post 1967 230

Hey all,

First post here. I've got a brother-in-law of my wife who has a 67 230 (not an S or SL) on his land and it's not in horrible shape, but it needs work. It needs work done on the engine (biggest concern) and the body.

1. Anyone familiar with the kind of work an engine like this needs? It's a dual carburator, 6-cylinder. Supposedly, it was made for driving on the Autobahn and not for the States. A serviceman brought it back when he was done with his time in the military.

2. From all accounts, I've seen the 230 isn't worth nearly as much as a 230S or 230SL. Because of the amount of money I'd have to put in, I don't know if it's worth my time or money. Anyone know about the difference between US and European versions of this car and any difference in value? Any telling signs to be able to know the difference? I found some general details online stating that there are two versions, but nothing of substance. I have some pictures I took of the car this weekend, and I can email them.

Thanks in advance!

1. Depends on what the problems are with the engine. Does it run at all? Does it consume oil? It should have a M180 engine.

2. From the description it is a "small" Fintail (W110 series), that means indeed that it is worth less than the more luxurious big Fintail (W111 and W112 series). On the other side, parts are usually easier to come by and cheaper.

US versions often had lower-compression engines with reduced power to comply with emissions standards, but that might not have been the case in 1967. The US versions were often more luxurious, with A/C, automatic transmission, electric windows etc. The instruments were in English too. The lights were a bit different too.

You can post the pictures here too.

The 230 had a 6 cyl added by the factory. The radiator was moved forward to accommodate the added length of the 6 cyl and an expansion tank was added to the firewall because there was no radiator cap on the radiator.

Firstly, you need to check the engine, as stated before, look for rust, check the running gear and grease the chassis. In other words, check the whole car and fix what needs fixing.

Is it a manual or auto? Please post some pics.

You can replace the engine with one from a 250S or 280S, as well as other 6 cyls from that era, 2.2 or 2.3 liter.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant
