My speedometer does not work. It didn't move since I got the car in February. Recently, it broke loose of its binding gag, jumped from 0 to 120 and started screaming at me. Stupid thing. BTW- I wasn't going more than 25 - 40 MPH. The remaining instruments seem to work normally. I was thinking that I either don't care how fast I am going, or I will have to replace the speedometer with a new one. Or a new old one. Are there any new, cool looking ones that would be compatible with my 1976 450 SE? And how many gray hairs am I looking to collect in taking out the dash cover to get to the instruments? Thanks everyone for your help!
Regards - Sharon

You might consider repairing your unit, depending on what you find after you pull it and open it up: VDO Odometer Gears-Motometer Odometer Gears-Mercedes-BMW

Oooooooorrrrr -- might be a bad speedometer cable.

My 108's speedo screamed at me and then just crapped itself. I think I drove another 1000 miles before I had it fixed. At the time, I was stationed in San Diego and took it to a local speedo shop. They replaced the cable (my request) and repaired the speedo, all for a little under $150. They also pulled the speedo and reinstalled it once the work was done.

You can find a replacement at a junk yard for cheaper, but there's no guarantee it's any better than the one already in the car.

You should be able to find a shop in Flagstaff that does repair on speedometers. It might just need a new cable, if you're REALLY lucky.

You should be able to find a cable from the usual online places, and the installation may not be too ugly. Do you do any of your own mechanical work, or do you have someone that does it for you? This is usually not a hard job.

the speedo on my 450sel started sceaming one day when i was 75 miles from home. nearly went nuts listening to it for over an hour. when i got home i pulled the cluster and sprayed pb blaster into the cable housing (which i'm sure, everyone here will tell you is the wrong thing to do) and a year and 10,000 miles later it hasn't made a sound.

If your cable is making noise, you can go to many auto parts stores and get a tube of lubricant for speedo cables. Usually just a few dollars is al it costs.

A cable that has not been seated properly into the fitting at the back of the speedo could cause the sort of behavior in the original post, though. You'd have to get lucky to only have that problem, but you can hope.

I agree with the above. Now I am not personally familiar with your model and year but from your post I'm thinking you have got it wrong. The speedometer is removed by pulling the instrument cluster out (towards you as you sit in the drivers seat). You do not need to remove it all the way, only enough to get to the speedo.

I doubt there is any other speedometer that would fit or work in your car besides that kind. But most (all) GPS devices and even my iPhone with GPS software will display your current speed. So up could use something like that.

Good luck
