Parts Interchange '72 220 to '73+ 230

Hey all,

How many of the engine/driveline/mechanical parts wil swap from a 1973 (or newer, not sure on the year) 230 sedan into my '72 220? They are both packing the M115 and are both automatics. Do major mechanical differences exist between the 220 and 230 engines?

I know the bumpers are out as they are the big nasty diving board style, so I assume this means front fenders, grille and hood as well?

Any hints would be appreciated!

Mechanically-wise they are almost identical. If the one has the "parking bench" bumpers then it is a '74 up. Pretty much everything body-wise with the exceptions of hood, grill, and minor trim pieces will interchange. The fenders will fit but you'll need to do a bit of fill where the original bumpers mounted on the '74.

The doors will fit but they eliminated the "wing" window.

The fenders are different too. Basically the entire front end sheet metal is different between a W115/8 (1968-1973 Gen.I if you will) and a W115/4 (1974-1976 Gen.II). Same is true for the W114 body. They changed everything, hood, fenders, grille, valance, core support and bumpers. The only thing on the front clip that will interchange is the headlights. Even they had different versions but can be retrofitted.

It looks a whole lot more like it does today than it did yesterday?

Quite right. I forgot to mention if you changed the fenders you need to use the entire front clip from the donor. You can use a '74 front clip on a '73 and older but you have to use all of the front clip. Radiator mount and all.

Awesome! Thanks for the help guys!

I am going to pick this car up strictly as a parts car, strip out what I need and scrap the car. The body is pretty ratty but the interior is mint and the car is a solid runner.

With the rad support being different, does this mean the radiator will not interchange?

The radiators will interchange but they are mounted further back on the '74 which why you have to change the mount.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am pulling parts from the newer car to the older one....so do I need to update the mount to fit the new radiator?

Only if you are using the front clip from the newer car. The radiator should be a straight change over using the older car's hoses.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. It is much appreciated.

I am trying to strip the newer one down for as many interchangeable spare parts as I can get off it before scrapping it.
