Post Tales from the Pit, 1959 220S Sedan

After driving all day last Saturday and running errands, I parked the 220S and visited with my brother at his home. After an hour I was ready to leave, turned the key, pushed the starter button, nothing! Lights worked, but the starter was totally dead. Checked the battery, 100% good. Due to the late hour and heat, we pushed it off and got it started. Yesterday I checked the battery terminal again, fuses, all okay. THEN, removed cleaned ground strap, still no fire. FINALLY (Len, you will love this) I removed and cleaned the wires leading to the starter solenoid. She fired right up! A good ending for what seemed to be a starter rebuild! Now about that dash clock . . . . . . . !

A similar thing happened to me many years ago with my 220SEb. It turned out that the wire to the starter solenoid had broken inside the sheathing holding the wire and the battery cable. Luckily I was parked in a shopping center with a Sears, went in, bought some electrical tools, wire etc, rewired the broken wire and I was able to continue on my way.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant
