1950s Mercedes Sedan Value

Hi. Well, a neighbor that lives 2 houses down from me has been sitting on a 1950s Mercedes sedan for decades. When I was 15, I asked him how much he wanted for it, he said $5k. If I had the money back then, I would have bought it.

He said it was used as a parade car so it has low milage and that it does run, although Iv never in my 15 years of living here seen him even go near the car let alone start it. So I cant be sure it runs. But considering the car has been sitting ungaraged for decades, it looks amazing and rust free from what I can tell.

I figure if I can offer him $5k in cash he would probably take it, not even knowing what the car is really worth especially if it has low milage on it. Im unsure of the exact model of it, its been years since Iv looked at it up close but when I did it looked prestine.

Id venture to say its probably a 180, Ill have to get a closer look tomorrow to see the model number on the back (which I can see the car from my garage, just cant make out the numbers). And Ill try and get some pictures of it and talk to him.

If its a 180 with low milage and in mint condition, what would it be worth? Iv been eyeing this car for years, I must have it.

If it's a 180a, $5,000 is too much. 170 maybe?

Ok, went to check it out today but the guy that owns it wasnt there but the person that was home said I could take pictures.

Its a 220 S:

As you can see, it does need some body work. I didnt look at the other side. But the most concerning thing is the missing star on the hood. Which, if Im not mistaken, they dont make those old ones anymore so I might have to search for one. I hear they are expensive but alot more quality made then the newer stars.

So price? I looked online and I seen em for anywhere from $900 to $12k. They said it runs, Iv yet to see it run. And the tyres as expected are flat.

And I just noticed the passenger side indicator is gone. That too would probably be a search to find. It looks I might be able to pick this up for cheaper than I expected, seeing as its looking further from "mint" as I thought. Havent really seen the interior yet, that will probably mostly determine the price (if it is indeed running).

If its not running (which I dont think it is) then Im hoping he would settle for $1k considering the condition its in and the work needed to restore it. And in todays economy, and as long as it has been sitting there, I would think he would take almost anything for it to get some quick cash.

Ok, well they finally got back to me and now he wants $6k.

I told them that was too much for the condition its in, I offered $3k at most.

From what Iv seen online, $3k is probably a pretty generous price for this car considering the condition its in, the fact it hasnt been driven in 20+ years, and considering it probably doesnt even run. And the interior might need alot of work.

I guess this car is just going to have to sit until some rich collector comes by and sees it. That poor thing. She really is a beauty and needs some love, but for $6k she wont be gettin no love from me!

if that car has been sitting on dirt like that for many years it's going to be rotted to death underneath, not something that's going to be an easy restoration at all

True. If that car has been sitting outside for decades there is an extreme amount of hidden rust. It is deceiving by the condition of the exterior. Hidden under body rust and chassis rust is an expensive problem. Also all the rubber is probably toast. I'd get under that car before offering anything. For 5 or 6 g's you can get a running model with little rust that looks like that. (one for sale local for 4900).

Actually it is a 1963 180c on kc mo craigslist. I'm not sure of the differences between the two, but the body style is the same (I think)

Thanks for the responses.

Sadly, I dont think this guy wants to get rid of this car for less than $5k. And its sad really, since hes not ever going to do anything with it but let it sit and rot even more.

I asked why he wants $6k for it, and he said "cuz its a Mercedes". While I love Mercedes, thats not a good enough reason to overprice the car to me. While it may hold sentimental value, it holds little to no value to anyone else right now.

I dont even think Ill offer him a price at all until I get to fully look over the car. If the interior is rotted along with the engine/chassis/body/etc then he might as well just give it away.

Also, about the 63 180. Im thinking the 63 180 is not worth near as much as a 55-56 220S. Especially in the future.

I cant be certain, but if you look it was last tagged in 2002. Perhaps it was running in 2002? I cant remember that far back, but as far back as I can remember its been in that exact same spot. Im wondering if maybe it was still used as a parade car up until 2002 or something. Or maybe thats just when he decided to stop tagging it. Who knows. I know Iv never seen the car drive at all. But 2002 may be when he got it.
