It's not meant to start the engine in any position other than N or P.

I also had issues with the car moving in park. There's a locking mechanism that doesn't engage correctly if the bushings on the gear selector linkage have gone bad (mine went bad and I had them rebuilt for $220 at a San Diego tranny shop).
