W115 Seat Belts

Forgive me if this question has been asked before, but I could not find it when I did a quick search of the forums.

Can rear shoulder belts be retrofitted into a 1972 220 W115 sedan?

I am purchasing this car on Sunday/Monday and did not check if it has selt belts in the rear, I know it has three-point harnesses in the front.

Thanks for your help gents!

OK, got a better look at the rear selt belts today.

I have a full set of lap belts in great shape, but will still need to retrofit/upgrade to later W114 seat belts that had tensioner reels mounted to the parcel shelf.

Anyone wrecking a later W114/W115 sedan and can spare rear seat belts? Tan colour would be ideal.

I've got a line on a set of rear reel-type selt belts from a '76 W115 300D, can anyone confirm that the fitment is direct into an older W115?

My parcel tray is slightly different than the donor car. It has one rear center speaker and the donor car has two stereo speakers left and right.

Any other differences or issues that would prevent this swap I need to know about?

Anyone? We've all got seat belts in our cars!

Bump!

I may also try to retrofit reel-type belts into the front, do these interchange between later W115's and a 1972?

I have a '73 220 D and I have updated the front seat belts. Originally my car had a lap belt on a spring loaded retractor and the female part was on a stiff wire to hold it up where you can reach it and it was bolted to the center hump down at the bottom.

The car also had a shoulder harness in front - this was a separate belt that attached to the lap belt and was a pain to fasten. So I got a later year seat belt - combination lap and shoulder just like modern cars (although the place I bought it did make a special effort to find one that would use the same female parts so I didn't have to replace them).

After many, many years the drivers belt retractor wore out and would not catch anymore. So again I replaced the front ones - this time with new ones that were after market -- I thought the problem would be any 'used' would have a lot of wear on them or would have rusted from lack of use.

The ones I put in were these (the top set on this page):
<http://www.discountbodyparts.com/catalog/?ymmsearch=true&Ntt=1976+Mercedes+Benz+300D+Seat+B elt>

I do not recall which store I got them from.

They work GREAT no snagging the fasten easily and will catch if you pull hard - but never lock up when they are not supposed to.

Now will they fit on your car? It is easy to tell - if you have a combination lap and shoulder harness someone has already updated your belts. It you have a lap belt that is attached to the floor / side under the passengers door this is original.

The new style lap / shoulder belt attaches to the pillar not the floor so the belt can go straight up. You can run your hand over the lower part of the pillar and you should be able to feel the hole for the bolt under the vinyl. If you can feel it (and it will be obvious) you can carefully cut a hold here and screw in the bolt that holds the belt retractor. The other parts all go into the existing holes.

As for the back seat - I can't help you because I have not updated mine. But get a flashlight and crawl into your trunk then look up. You should see a bold hole if there is one there. If not I suppose you could create one but I'd worry it would pull out in a crash.
