Post 450 SEL (special protection version)

Hello,
I came across a euro-spec 450 SEL equipped with bulletproof glass, armored doors, fender flag poles, sunroof in the back, etc. I spoke with the owner and he is selling it for $650. He claims that it used to belong to and ambassador from Iran. It runs and has 75K klm on the motor. It has some rust as usual. It's an awesome car and I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it despite it's rough shape, it's worth more than 650 in scrap metal and parts. What do you know about these cars? I couldn't find a production number or much other info on the armored W116's. And Apparently it's called a "WerksPanzer". I have the VIN number but I haven't tried to run it though a decoder. What's a good site that I can use?

Thanks

It would be good to get pictures. Certainly worth saving if it's in good enough shape.

With best regards

Al

Armored Mercedes always hold or appriciate in value, sounds like it could be a good buy if rust hasn't eaten it up.

Werkspanzer means it had been armoured and prepared at the factory, not by some aftermarket company.

Hi. I don't know much about your prospective addition, but I do know that it sounds like it would just be the cat's meow if you got it restored. $650 is not a bad place to start. Bullet poof glass? Wow. Go for it. And post pictures!!
Regards, Sharon

I'm going to contact the owner tomorrow and set a time to see the car again. It could be in my drive way before the week ends.

I was only able to snap one picture of the car. The lot was crowded and didn't allow me enough space to back up and take the photo. You can see the rust at the bottom of the door, the body itself wasn't horrible.

Looks like one of the Mercedes armoured by Armalite Ltd (UK) for the Iranian, Jordan, Oman and Spanish govs on the late `70s. Reputedly Armalite build aprox 125 cars for this govs, most of them ending in Iran and Spain.

It was usual practice for Armalite to order cars with rear manual sunroofs. I own three Armalites at the moment, two 6.9 with rear sunroof and a regular 450 SEL with the sunroof in front. Mine are ex-Spanish gov cars.

Rust on the front doors is also "normal" on Armalite's, as kevlar and ceramic tiles on the doors tend to block water draining holes, so you end with rotten doors!!!

What's amazing in Armalite is the weight,..., they are very light for an armoured car, because all opaque armouring is made of kevlar.

Sorry I haven't updated this thread, been using W116.org more. Yes, I got the car. I unfortunately didn't pay 650 for it, the guy who gave me the price has the owner of the lot and not the car. I ended up paying more but nothing outrageous.

ferguson126, do you know if Armalite has any record of the cars they built? The guy who sold it to me said that it belonged to an Iranian but he had no papers to show any proof of previous diplomat ownership.
