Advice on pricing Vintage Benz's

I'm looking for help and advice on determining the value of classic and collectible benz's.

I have two in particular that I'm interested in:

First) a 1970 280 SE 4 Dr. Mostly original. Numbers match. Good interior. Wood on dash is nice. Wood by windshields badly needs restoration. Some minor body work was done by a professional shop (no bond-o, etc). No rust, dents, etc. Runs well. Factory air (not sure if it works or not... been repaired several times... need to check it to see). 175,000 miles. (Considering selling... trying to establish value - Arlington, VA).

Second) '89 420 SEL - Very, Very well kept. (Recently totaled. Trying to determine value for insurance purposes. Details posted in W126 thread. link is here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w126...el-superb.html)

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Please post here for the 1970 280 SE, and use the W126 thread for postings about the w126.

Thanks for all help, info and advice!

Sincerely,

-Philip

It would be helpful if you'd attach pics.

Regarding the 280SE, try nada.com as a baseline for classic car values. An "established" value and fair market price may be two different things though. Typically, a very nicely kept 280 can run upwards of $5000, perhaps more. The highest I ever saw one was $19k, but it was absolutely pristine/perfect/totally restored. The lower end 280's, with faded paint, crappy interior, poorly running engine, etc I've seen priced for $400.

Do I understand correctly that you're selling the 280?

Grubeguy,

Thank you for the info and the reply.
That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

The car is my mother-in-laws car, and yes, we are looking to sell it.
I don't have photos (yet). I was hoping to sell to someone who can see it locally
since their are so many variables in the condition of the car, I don't want the buyer
to get any false impressions. We're located in northern Virginia (outside of DC).

I see that you're deployed in the middle east. You will be in our prayers for a safe return.

Sincerely,

-Philip

Thanks for the kind thoughts Philip!

If the car is in mostly good running condition, I'd recommend spanding a weekend cleaning, buffing and shining the paint as best you can. Same thing with the interior - clean it out to best of its condition. You'll get a better selling price.

If the thing is a total basket case, you might consider parting it out, though doing so requires you have storage space and time to see to the slow sale of pieces. Can you post pics of the 280?
