Opinions on turning aluminum finned brake drums?

Hello -

I salvaged a pair of front brake drums from a 1961 220 Sb, which I believe to be the same as the rear brake drums for a 1963-65 230 SL. My intent was to resurface them and sell them.

I have taken them to a reputable shop and been told that they are in excellent condition and that due to the nature and unatainability of the drums, I should not resurface them but use them as-is.

I see opinions on this, and also if someone knows how I tell if they are within specification (thickness) on the steel sleave.

thanks
Scott

Good advice, if it doesn't need it don't do it.

I have three sets of those, one set was on the car (front 220 SEb) and hit a major pot hole on Sepulveda Blvd, El Segondo, blew the two hubcaps off, did not puncture the tires, and the front drum was slightly out, where it hit, a slight turning and all OK.

I spoke to a shop in Ontario California who says that he will inspect them when he does the re-shoeing and decide what they need if anything... any other opinions? What is it that is difficult about springs with the shoes?
