Question Considering buying a 1971 220D...

Hello folks,

I am considering buying a low mileage 1971 220D as a project car. I have found a clean one for sale locally with only 47k miles, the seller is asking $2500 obo.

I was wondering if there are any specific things to look out for when purchasing one, and I also would like to know about some of the common problems with the car.

Mainly I am looking to clean it up a little, lower it on bags and cruise the crap out of it in the summer hehe

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely;

Rich

Look for rust, they are prone to it.

With best regards

Keep in mind these cars are extemely slow, but given proper maintenance, they will last a lifetime.

Will the car start easily? Once warmed up, is there excessive smoke coming out of the exhaust upon acceleration?

Where are you located?

As stated above, look out for rust.

Also check all of the fluids and see if they look good.

I would seriously question that mileage on a diesel. Check the service book to verify. It has more likely rolled over once.

Anything made of rubber needs to be looked at. leaks. Odometer may be busted, slept for years or rolled. Easy cold starts. And yes rust all over. Even if it only has 47k, it could have rust issues and rotten rubber
