W114 250 Auto trans question

Hi there
I own a 1976 W114 250 with the 2.8ltr M130 engine and auto trans.
Just a quick question...
When drive 'D' is selected the car only goes up to 3rd gear. Is this correct? Is the car only meant to have three gears avaliable in 'D' or should there be a fourth? I have noticed when 'L' is selected the car goes into a very low gear. But this low gear is never used when 'D' is selected. So... my question is, is top gear in my car 3rd or should it be changing to a 4th higher gear?

When in D or S, the car starts in second gear.

First gear is only used when you use kickdown (in D or S) or in L.

1st gear will get you about 8 mph - enough to get the car rolling forward. Try starting the car in low and manually shift up.

Great, thanks a lot for that. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know around what rpm the engine is spinning at at highway speed (60mph)?
