1978 280CE timing, valve and ignition
I had either a blown head gasket or a cracked head on my 1978 280ce. I replaced it with a head from a good 1977 280SE engine which was in very good shape and supposedly identical. Along with it I used the 77's cams, camboxes etc. The only difference I could find through research is that the head bolts are longer. I used them as well. The original problem is repaired but my ignition timing is waaaay off. The valve timing is spot right on as well as the ignition but to get the car to run just about correctly I had to advance my ignition like thirty degrees. The compression is fine, I am thinking of using the 77's distributor but doubt if that will help. I would really like to know why I had to advance it so much. Any help and thoughts with this are greatly appreciated.
