'75 240D Headlight Switch Replacement

Hello I need to replace the headlight switch on my 1975 240D, the actual switch not the knob. I purchased a new switch and crawled onto my back under the dash and was surprised to see that this may be a little more than I can handle lol. Is there a trick to this replacement or is it as difficult as it seems to me? Looking under the dash it appears that I'm going to have to disassemble a big part of the dash to replace this switch, I'm a little nervous about removing the dash this is an old car and the dash seems to be brittle in some spots. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am a first time Mercedes owner and not a professional mechanic lol.

If it is like my 1983 240D, pull the knob straight off. This is not easy. I used a towel and a pair of about 10" vice grips opened one or two notches, so the jaws were angled in. It didn't marr the knob. BUT, before you do anything else, disconnect the ground wire on the battery so there is no power. The lightswitch is always hot. Underneath the knob is a nut that holds the switch in place. Unscrew the nut, and take the backing plate with the symbols and set it aside. You are now free to pull the switch down and replace the wires one pole at a time. Just make sure you get the wires hooked up correctly, as some are input and some output. Both the old switch and hopefully the replacement have terminals that have letter designations.
