When did Mercedes start

importing to the USA? Also what models were first imported here? I have seen a few for sale from the 50's but come to find out they were imported by a either someone who was in the military back then, or in some other business overseas.

When did mercedes start?? Try the 19th century... In 1885, German mechanical engineer, Karl Benz designed and built the world's first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine. ...

I think Mercedes Benz vehicles were sold through Studebaker-Packard delearships in the 1950's. Some military servicemen brought home their Pontons or Adenauers after their tour of duty in Europe also in the 1950's. I am not sure if there were Mercedes Benz distributors in the U.S. prior to the Second World War.

The Studebaker-Packard dealers were the first to officially bring MBs into the US; Mercedes had a deal with them from 1958-1963. The early MBs sold well-enough, but when Studebaker started to fail, Packard bought them out not knowing how bad they were financially. Eventually, the debts forced Packard to bankruptcy as well. As all that was going on, Mercedes realized that they'd better jump ship quickly, so they went to the dealers and convinced many of them to walk away from the Stude-Packard mess and become MB dealers. That was around 1966.
