1976 240d air filter = WTF? Oil in air filter!

Okay, I have this beautiful car. Bought it about a month ago and have been turning it up ever since.

I noticed today that the air intake has a clamp for a filter at the front left of the engine, took the clamp off and removed a filter. This filter was sitting in oil, it seems oil is meant to be in there. (I f***ing hope because there was alot).

Germans were smart people, why would you mix oil and air intake? I really dont understand. I've searched the forum alot and cant find many posts about this.. can someone help me please.

It is normal. The oil is there to trap the dust particles.

Clean the air filter every 3000–5000 miles or so (sooner if you are driving on dusty roads) and fill with new engine oil up to the level indicated. Clean the wire mesh filter too with diesel or kerosene.
