W108 Roadtrip - MA to SC

Driving from MA to SC next month (about 2000 miles roundtrip) and have decided to take the 1973 280SE. Have read a number of posts where the general consensus seems to be that these cars are made for long, open road trips and it can be an adventure. I'm convinced - the spouse, not so much. I'm taking the essentials: a cell phone, credit cards, AAA card and the MB toll free number. I'll even take a few tools (more for show than actual use) and some oil and other fluids. What would help ease my wife's concerns would be if I had some indy names along the way in case we have an issue. I will check the recommended repair shops section, of course, but was looking for any personal recommendations.

Thanks, in advance. Will try to post pictures and updates along the way. Let the adventure begin next month.

Have fun!

Try to make as many miles as possible before heading for the trip, so that possible trouble is already taken care of before you leave.

Also, take a few simple replacement parts with you (belts, air filter, plugs, wires) and some universal repairstuff, just in case. (stuff always breaks down when you dont have the parst with you )

Last year I did a 5000km roadtrip through Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany with a W123 300TD. The main drawback on that car was that the diesel was really way too slow for the highways, but you shouldnt have that issue with a gaasoline 280.

That is exactly the plan. Had the indy go through it completely and replace belts, hoses, etc. and will now drive it around until the trip to shake out any remaining issues.

Just returned from the 8 day, 2200 mile road trip from MA to SC (sorry no pictures yet). Car ran almost flawlessly (one minor hot start issue after sitting in traffic at a gas station for 20 mins - it started, but not easily like usual). Averaged almost 17 mpg, car's sweet spot seems to be 70 mph and it was much more comfortable than I anticipated. Encountered all kinds of weather - torrential rain, fog, cold, and high heat. Just missed the tornado in NC, but did see much of the devastation.

A great adventure and it was great to drive it like it was meant to be driven. People loved seeing it and couldn't believe it was driven that far.

Fortunately, did not need any repairs, but I appreciate the info on indys from those that responded.

What a memorable adventure for you and your wife. I would love to see pics once you get settled in at home, glad the car served you well and I know I would have been excited to see one rolling down a modern highway.

The W108's are tough as nails when maintained properly!
