At 18 years old, the last thing you need is an expensive German car into which to lose any money you might have accumulated. These cars will all cost you at least $1000 a year to run and probably closer to $1500.

But, if you're determined, it'd be an easy guess for you to skip the SLC and the SL - the older the more expensive. Frankly speaking, a $5000 300E better be in perfect condition - you can find $2000 300E's everywhere. Why not buy one of those?

Newer is better; if you're gonna do this, then I'd suggest you buy late '80s w126 or an early 90's w124. The w210s are cheap but quite expensive to keep moving. I'd also highly recommend you buy one from someone on this site, peachparts, or the MBCA website. They usually have great quality cars that have been well-cared for, all within a fair price range.

Skip the Craiglist idiots who have no idea what they own and ask way too much.

Is the 86 300 a diesel? If so I'd say to get that.
You can't go wrong with a diesel! (unless you are looking for performance)

Take a look at a 190d. they are easy to maintain and really good on fuel (I'm getting over 37mpg).
Saves me alot of money considering I'm also 18 and paying for school + 2 cars

As mentioned, a $5000 300e should be nearly perfect. Expect a car with under 100k miles for that money, no bodywork or painting done or needed, all maintenance up to date (have it inspected by a qualified mechanic) but it would definitely be the best car out of the three you are looking at.

For 5k, you can expect bodywork and neglected maintenance on a V8 seventies coupe or 'vert.

Since you ask the question without giving too much details on either the cars or your requirements, I will assume, that you do not have much mechanical experience yet. And therefore, avoid the V8s for now. Engine trouble on those cars will quickly drain your bank account.

Instead, look for a W123 or 124. Personnally I do not like the W201 (190-series) because quite frankly, they are to small and this compromises legroom and seatin for the driver.

I'd also avoid the W126 as those often end up at people who want to drive a big Benz but arent prepared (or unable) to maintain them properly.
