79 280d new to me

I just was given my grandfather's, who has since passed, 1979 280d which appears in fairly good condition. My uncle was keeping it for a while and says that it needs a vaccuum pump. So my first question is what all is contolled by vaccuum on these vehcicles? this is my first mercedes. Secondly he has told me that it has no power after it is run for about a half hour or so. Any ideas of where to start? Im fairly knowlegable with vehicles. Thanks

Well, start with what you have. No such thing as a "280D" - so either you have a 280E with a gas engine or a 300D with a diesel engine. Vaccuum controls a lot on these cars, and if you've got vaccuum leaks, you need to get those rectified.

It sounds like you have a w123 body style car - start with searching vaccuum pumps and diagrams in the w123 Forum. Welcome!

If it is either a 240D or 300D you need to replace the vacuum pump pronto. If the pump "grenades" then you can quickly lose the engine to either rapid oil loss or metal fragments of the drive mechanism.

Easy replacement job.

If it is a 280 M110 gasser the pump sits on the top right front of the cam housing. I don't believe they still used this vacuum assist pump in 1979 but I might be wrong.
