3.0 straight 6 All Aluminum M189

Anyone out there familiar with the M189 3.0 all aluminum engine? It came in the W112 and the Adenauer... But I purchased a W111 250se and this motor was in it instead.
There is this wheel behind the harmonic balancer that spins freely even for a few seconds after the engine is off, whats the deal, why? and what if it goes bad am I screwed and if so how bad??

Hi, firstly, the wheel is the damper flywheel and if it's spinning the friction discs have disintegrated. You need to remove the pulley(s) and undo the four blots that hold the damper together.

The damper is made up of a couple of plates which are squeezed together with several short springs.
The plates are seperated with friction discas and if they fail the springs do not squeeze hard enough as the damper flywheel spins. If Some one has had the damper off in the past they not have replaced the bolts correctly and they have either broken or just come loose.

When remving the damper use a couple of small clamps to hold the assembly to gether until you have it off. And it's heavy!!
I have spares for these engines (in Australia) if you get stuck. As it is,the engine is actually more valuable than the car it's in.

there are some fun things on an M189, where Mercedes went all out to get some extra HP and torque by doing several exotic things. That damper is one example. The plumbing for the oil to the fan clutch is another. Your water pump is hiding behind the generator.

Parts are obscenely expensive. Do not hurt that distributor cap, you won't be able to afford a replacement.

Cool, good to know. Are you saying those things are already done or are they things I can have done? I saw the water pump back there.
The fan clutch is an issue how ever, the engine is in a 66 250se. so the person who did it before I obtained it welded the clutch to the electro magnet carrier (stupid) because the 250se did not have the wireing needed to activate the clutch.
Needless to say I'm going to reverse that.
The distributor cap I am very aware of... Thanks though.
I'm actually returning to my country of origin in a few days which is not to far from Venezualia I was told by a local I can have that cap duplicated I am willing to try it.. Crazy, I know, but... I might be able to make it avail to those who would need replacements at a fraction of the cost.
Story behind it is I bought 4 w111 for $3k plus 4 engines 2 trannys and enough parts to completly rebuild em all. One of the cars has the M189, and it runs like a sewing machine.
