Power Steering Problem

I can not, for the life of me, figure out how to tighten the power steering pump on my 74' 240D. I've read (and been told) that the adjustments are on the side of the pump, but I can't find it. If anyone has some decent pictures that would be amazing! If not pictures, then a clear description of what I'm looking/feeling for would be great as well.

Thanks!

I think you are wanting to tighten the gearbox, not the pump. the adjustment is on top of the gearbox. it is an allen head locked down by a nut. Loosen locking nut, turn allen ccw, then tighten locking nut without turning allen head. Unless you are actually talking about the power steering pump belt. If so disregard what you have just read.

Thanks for the info, but yeah, I am trying to tighten the actual belt. It appears that the previous owner had never done any maintenance on the car. Once I got it home, I found that the alternator was loose and the belt was worn down to about 1/8th of an inch wide. In the process of replacing the alternator, and all of the belts, I was able to loosen the pulley enough to get the old power steering belt off, but reversing the same process has not allowed me to tighten the belt enough to be safe. Any thoughts?

The pump on my 84 300d has 3 bolts/studs. 2 are in slotted holes the 3rd is used to as a pivot point. loosen all bolts, I use a bar to put pressure on the pump to tighten the belt. with pressure applied tighten bolts( may take two people). The 240d may be similar to this. Some one may say not to use a bar, but just be carful. hope this helps.

Pump is held to the bracket with three bolts. Two in the front, one in the back. Bolt holes in bracket are slotted. Loosen bolts, pry pump over to tighten the belt then lock it in place. Ratcheting spreader may help hold pump in place.
