Post M189 "Big Six" Motor

So I lucked up... I purchased 4 W111 for $3k along with a Bunch of extra parts including 4 motors and 3 trannys one of the cars is a 66 250se that has an all aluminium M189 3.0 in it (the green one). This motor has an extra free spining wheel on the back of the harmonic balancer that spins for a few seconds after the engine shuts down. but when you rev the motor it majkes a sound as if its binding or some bearings are worn does anyone have any info on this thing? i can post pic if needed.

So here are some pics of the cars... as you can see I wasted no time, I got right to it with the restoration on the 62 220se which only had surface rust (all solid)next woould be the green 66 250se which has the ''BIG SIX'' in question it needs floors and third would be the black top I think 64 or 65 220se... and the blue in the back ground is a doner.... thanks guys. BTW I have better pic of my progress

Nice one! I think a W111 coupe will be the next car I add to the collection.

Are you sure the W108 is a 250SE and not a W108 300SE ? .They made 2700 (plus) 300SE W108's between 1965 and 1967 . No air suspension and they had a m189 engine (189-986 or 189-989 ) .These were the original factory hot Rod sedans before the V8's came out. A rare car anywhere today, especially in the US.

Regarding the 'spinning wheel" on the front of the engine. The damper has come to peices and needs to be repaired . it has six springs and two rubber blocks inside which work by pushing a brake disc against the large outside wheel to dampen down vibrations.

I see... Well this one (the green one ) is actually a 66 W111 250se accordong to the classic centre in cali and the vin. But thats is interesting to know though, Whom ever did the swap did an excellent job!

Also, the motor has an electro clutch I can tell it's proberbly not a factory build because the electro fan clutch plate is welded to the carrier I guess the car didn't have the circuitry to operater the clutch.

As far as the damper, I did take it apart and saw there were no rubber nor springs, it was just the two plates sandwished together but there were two wierd looking plastic disks between the mail damper and another between the block and the free spinning disks, where one of those plastic disks/washers were damaged.

However I thank you all so very much for your responses and info.
Regards...
