W115 220D flywheel swap

I just got given a 1973 220D from a friend of a friend. It was running a year ago. The PO got it checked out by a mechanic and apparently its the flywheel. They were quoted $1000 to fix it.

Its a automatic transmission. Is this a difficult DIY? I am having trouble finding info on w115. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Other then the one seriously rusty spot the rest of the car is pretty decent. Interior is in really nice shape.

It is not that difficult, but if you want to do it properly, you have to transfer the balance of the old flywheel to the new one.

Also measure the bolts for wear or use new ones.

Just curious ,

your car is auto trans , so it does not have a flywheel.

It has a flex plate and torque converter.

What is wrong that the mechanic wants to charge $1000 for??

MB seems to think that auto transmissions have a flywheel. From the FSM:

It is different from the manual gearbox one.

You can also just replace the ring gear, if that is what is wrong with it.
